I first met Gil Williams sometime in the early 1990’s upon my return to St. Louis after my first trip to Asia. And upon entering his MacroSun store, I was instantly transported back to Asia due to the melodious music playing, the smell of incense, and all the lovely products on display. I knew I had found a person with a shared love and appreciation for a fascinating part of our world.

In the passing years, I ended up volunteering in Nepal and later helping found and run a nonprofit corporation launching development projects there. Nepal grew to consume more of my time and energy and typically I traveled and worked there several months a year. I continued to visit MacroSun during my St. Louis visits and over the years have seen how MacroSun is more than just a store.

Americans headed to Asia or returning from their incredible life-altering trip there would visit MacroSun. Immigrants from that corner of the world would seek out Gil and MacroSun. Folks planning to work or volunteer overseas would pass through. What I learned is that MacroSun also serves as an informal cultural center in St. Louis! Patiently Gil would listen to stories, answer questions, provide advice, facilitate valuable connections and more.

I saw how MacroSun sales were amazing events boasting Buddhist lamas, water buffalo, henna body art, and more! I saw Gil coordinate and promote Asian artists and musicians to perform locally. I watched him interact with local Tibetan and Nepali community groups. I witnessed how the various art, cultural and spiritual organizations respected and relied on Gil. On two occasions, I also crossed paths with him in Nepal. There I saw Gil interact with indigenous artists, shopkeepers, shipping agents, hotel workers and more. Clearly the genuine respect and fondness was mutual.

Hopefully, anyone walking into either of his 2 St. Louis stores will sense what I first sensed walking into MacroSun my first time many years ago. And while those online shopper might be missing out on the incense and music, they too, can sense and appreciate that unique MacroSun spirit.
