Ramayana fine wood relief
Some of the wood carvings of Bali are among the finest and most intricate imaginable, like nothing else available in the world. Because of its depth, powerful dramatic interplay of light and shadow dances beautifully across this breathtaking relief! The relief portion is hand-carved from a single piece of very deep, rich wood that is softer but very sturdy, called "Kapolan". It pictures a classic scene from the great Hindu epic of good and evil, the Ramayana. The scene pictures a "Rakashaha" (or Hindu demon) named Maricha, who has assumed the form of a deer in order to capture and captivate Sita, beloved goddess-wife of Rama, while in the forest. Rama is pictured with bow, along with his brother Lakshmana, and Hanuman, the monkey god. Measuring at 50
